Interview with ROTTEN COFFIN (Portugal)

ROTTEN COFFIN from Funchal Portugal with its new first release demo ‘Suffering, Chaos and Death’ on Jan 2021. It impresses with its pure old school death metal aura, the sickest HM2 distortions and even the most disgusting savage vocalist. It brings to the flanges of extreme realism the good old days of death metallist such CARNAGE, GRAVE or even Dutch's GOREFEST... Well, that's the summary I'm told about them and need to dig up the next more disgusting answer..

MD : Hi, how is life on Madeira Island..I see it's such a nice long beach there?

Hello! Well, Madeira is a very calm and quiet place! But if you are a metal fan it's probably not the best because there are hardly any (metal) events here or a real active underground metal scene. But of course, to work, live and build a family it is a great place, safe and sunny year round.

MD : Do you feel it’s hard for a death metal band to start out today especially in Madeira where you're from?

Well Death Metal is still very much an underground, "niche" type of music, so it is always hard to start to play this kind of music i guess, specially in Madeira, because of the lack of support from the community but also lack of musicians that have the real passion for this genre. It's a small place with its positive aspects but of course negatives too... I mean, there are a few extreme bands playing for a long time now here in Madeira, like Requiem Laus, Siamese Cancer or Karnak Seti, but there is not much "new blood" or new metal bands with a new, younger generation of musicians, at least when it comes to Metal.
MD :  ROTTEN COFFIN has just newly established, but you got such a good performance on your first demo.  Have you ever contributed in any group before?

Well, we are a new band, but we have been "in the scene" for a long time, Myself (Zé Rodrigues) and Guilherme Abreu were both part of "Siamese Cancer" and "Altar of Pain" back in early/mid 2000´s. Meanwhile, our vocalist Devourer, who is based in St.Petersburg, Russia, is experienced in several extreme metal bands such as "Warder" or "Sudden Rage" among others etc..

MD : How was the idea to came up as a pure death metal band?

Well it started back when we were active in another project called "Altar of Pain", when we came up with an idea for a more "raw, old school" kind of band called "Rotten Coffin" but never really wrote any music for it until 2020... When we started writing the songs, we always had in mind that we wanted an old school approach to the songs influenced highly by the old swedish ways, so that was the biggest inspiration for our demo, but this is not our only inspiration when it comes to writing music, as you will hear on our new record. Stay tuned, we promise not to disappoint!!
MD : Given that you’re the only three in the group, does it make the process of writing music easier or harder?

Well, it's not a hard process, we all share the same musical taste and influences, but we each have our own style and identity, so it it's really just a combination of all those elements, and with today's technology it is easy for us to swap and record ideas, that eventually end up in songs. So for us, it is not hard to write songs, also because we like to keep things simple and not complex or anything like that... just want the music to sound and feel good, and of course, brutal.

MD : You have informed that you will be working with a new drummer (Krzysztof Klingbein), how will the work go while you live in a different country?

Well, the drums have already been recorded and sound incredible, it was a very simple process, because Klingbein is a very professional musician, so all we had to do was send him the tracks for him to study, then once he recorded everything, he just sent his isolated drum tracks back to us, it was a very pleasant and easy process... all this thanks to the internet of course.
MD : Do you think every musician these days needs to understand the ins and outs of DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) to bring production to a great level?

Not really, i think the most important thing is playing what you love, be it Metal or Jazz or Pop or whatever, you can always have someone help you record your music. I guess the DAW stuff is more for guys into production, but of course if you want to work with musicians on-line, it is important to record everything correctly, which requires understanding of how DAWS work. And of course it's good for simple home recordings too, but you can have really professional stuff recorded at home these days with the right knowledge and equipment.

MD : For you personally, what is the heavier music, in general, that interests you?  Can you show it on any one band or album or is it more of an emotional treat?

We like all kinds of music, but especially Metal of course, Death, Black, Doom, Heavy etc... not a fan of the  modern "core" stuff, but we are very much influenced by the classic bands from the 80´s and 90´s, from Bathory to Bloodbath, or Black Sabbath to Slayer... even ambient stuff like Mortiis or Burzum ..we love it all. But for us the most important thing isn´t the "heaviness"  or complexity of the song writing... but the feeling and the groove of the music, of course sometimes it can be complex like Obscura or Watchtower and we love that, but love simple stuff like Motorhead or Obituary just as much. It's all about the "feeling".
