Interview with CULT OF ORPIST (Greece)

CULT OF ORPIST present this year's energetic and ear-warming self-titled debut EP, featuring 4 tracks inspired by the rapid development of pure thrash metal attacks that surged around the 90s/00s. The album cover art looks cult inspired by the old school, which is interesting. The opening track is short, sharp and savage, followed by a lot of bomb dives and extreme head banging scenes displayed next. To me they might remind you of teutonic timeless styles like Sodom, Destruction, Kreator...etc.

CULT OF ORPIST consisted of :
Sotiris Dimitropoulos ( Drums), Dimator (Lead Guitars), Chris Panagitsas ( Rhythm Guitars ) and Hector ( Vocals, Bass ).

Let's read our conversation with Hector below...

MD - Hi… How is life in Lamia?  Are there still a lot of thrash maniacs around?

Hello, and thanks for featuring CULT OF ORPIST. Lamia is a small city located at the center of Greece (60-70.000 population) and truth be told, there aren't a lot of heavy metal maniacs around. So, playing the music we love and seeing it come to life is something like our "happy hour", our getaway, our psychotherapy.

MD - You all have been members of some interesting bands before such as HOSTAGE, SOULLESS, MORTAL TORMENT and many more. How did you all meet and come up with the idea for this new band in 2021?

We all come from Lamia. Although, at some points of our lives some of us were living in other cities, we ended up back here, got to meet each other, became friends and that's how the Cult was born!

MD - Did experience lead you and the current members to mature and then achieve the sound you committed to recording?

The band was formed out of our common love for 90s Death and Thrash metal. Definitely, our background playing with other bands got some serious experience under our belt, and that helped a lot achieving this final result.

MD - The EP has great delivery and quality sound. So basically, what's the background of this release?

There is not much of a background on this; we had the riffs, we rehearsed a lot so we ended up with the final song structure. We have the luxury of having our own rehearsing and recording place, so we worked extra hard in terms of rehearsing and songwriting. The aesthetic of the band was pretty obvious from the very start...Cult of Orpist is an old school thrash/death band, in the path of 90's KREATOR, SODOM ,ENTOMBED ,BOLT THROWER, so our purpose was to capture this old school feeling that characterizes our music while taking extra care of a good-sounding, professional production. So after we finished recording, the whole band sat down and under my guidance [Hector] and insight as a professional sound engineer we created our debut EP. We are very happy and satisfied with the final product and we hope you will enjoy it, too.

MD - What are you hoping for with this first EP release?

This EP and everything that we create, is a piece of ourselves and our very souls. As any creator, we long for it to be appreciated and understood, to make everyone who listens to it as happy as it made us and maybe drink some tsipouro with us backstage, if they catch us on a live gig!!

MD - Do you have a deal with any labels at the moment? Any physical cassettes, CDs or vinyls you'll be releasing?

At the moment there’s no deal with any label, but it’s on our top priorities to strike one soon enough, so our EP can be released in physical format.

MD - According to your titled 'Wasted Scum', 'Dogs of War', I kind of get the message you're bringing... can you explain further and why this subject interested you?

"Wasted scum" and "Dogs of war" are 2 different songs as far as the lyrical concept is concerned; “Wasted Scum” tells the story of an outcast who likes metal and alcohol but society sees him as a pariah. I think every metalhead can relate at some point!! “Dogs of War” talks about the armies of Satan and the eternal beef with God. Everything we write is inspired by things and subjects we like, injected with the right amount of humor and blasphemy!

MD - Do you have any plans for the next year?

Yeah, we certainly have! We’re having a video clip coming in the next months and then, we’re planning to hit the stage, playing as many live gigs as possible, and maybe some touring abroad. Last but not least, we plan to enter the studio by the end of summer of 2023 recording a follow-up ep.

MD - Maybe there are some weaknesses that need to be aggressively addressed in future material?

I don’t know about that. We do a lot of thinking and even more rehearsing before we address our songs to the public. Our top priority is for us to be 1000% satisfied with the outcome, as we express ourselves through our music. I’m sure that as we grow, our music will grow with us… Although we are already grown enough 😛🤣

MD - Which are the most important and maybe the most precious items in your metal collection?

Tough question, that’s for sure! I’ve got so many records in my collection that it would take days to mention them all, so I’ll just pick two of my most priced possessions. First of all, I’ve got this guitar amp head signed by all ENTOMBED members (including the late Lars Goran Petrov). The other one is a hand-written manual for recording heavy metal drums by my absolute favorite sound engineer and great musician, Peter Tägtgren.

MD - Thank for your answers. Hopefully to get more thrashformation again with you soon!!  Your last growl...

Thank you for the interview and your on-point questions. You will surely hear more from us soon enough! Take no shit and give no shit either...Orpist will always be on your side...Stay heavy & Stay True to the Cult, Hector "Makis"🤘!!
