Interview with ANACHRONISM

ANACHRONISM, from Lausanne, Switzerland, offers the ultimate combination of brutality, technicality and catchiness along with their execution of progressive death metal style. The band was formed in 2009 and has previously released several demos, an EP, two albums in 2012 titled "Senseless" and "Orogeny" in 2018. Unexpectedly, a third album "Meanders" will follow in early 2023 under Unorthodox Emanations (Avantgarde Music). The band comes up with some strange guitar work with absurd technical riffs interspersed, accompanied by organic explosions on the drums and there are many variations to be found at some quite fast and very complex times without a doubt. So I wonder if we should waste time trying to add some more empty words, because you can read this short interview for some cool information and listen to ANACHRONISM by the way.

MD - How and what made you interested in joining the technical death metal band ANACHRONISM started?

Manu : I joined the band in 2016, after the release of the 1st EP "reflecting the inside". I was working in a music shop with the former singer, Matt Favre at the time and their guitarist had just left the band so they were looking for someone to replace him. Coming from a rather prog metal background, it was very enriching for me and I immediately felt at ease in the heart of the band, both humanly and musically.

MD - I know you're working on a whole new material right now, right? What's the band's mindset, and what makes this upcoming record special?

After releasing Orogeny in 2018 we wanted to compose new songs with the same approach but with more ambient/aerial parts. We like the contrast of aggressive riffs and soft arpeggios. The next album will be in the continuity of the previous one and we are trying to match the progressive and technical aspects of our music with its complex structures in compositions that convey a real message. In short, we are trying to move away from the "tech-death" label to something more and more refined. For example, we have chosen not to use samples and synth layers in this album, unlike in Orogeny. Everything you hear in terms of "special effects" in the next album comes from the sound design of the guitars that we worked on. But blastbeats and brutal riffs will always be part of the game, of course!

MD - What was the motive behind you releasing 'Source' and 'Mirage', these two as demo tracks, in 2021?

The goal was first of all to make a test for ourselves in terms of sound design. We decided to collaborate with Alex Sedin, from Ghostalgy prod, to get an idea of what we could achieve in the most DIY way as possible. Initially, we wanted to keep these demos to ourselves but we were so happy with the result that we decided to publish them!

MD - Anachronism means something, or an idea, that exists outside of time in history.  Can you correct some information and tell us a little about the lyrics and what I imagine is some illusion hidden there and where the source came from?

At the beginning, we were fascinated by the theme of time and all the theories surrounding it. « Time » is something mysterious that we can't really touch or explain. Also, an « Anachronism » is an error, or something out of its time, and when we chose this name we didn't feel in the same wavelength than society (and it's always the case) so it matches with the « error » thing.
The lyrics themes evolved since the firsts releases. We talked a lot about human feelings, introspection, mental diseases... and now we talk more about nature, ecology, relations between human and its environment.

MD - Are you still excited about this 'old' album, "Senseless", And "Orogeny" where you contributed and does it still reflect what ANACHRONISM is today?

..."Senseless" is our first full-lengh album so it takes part in our discography but we were kids when we recorded it and we evolved so much that we don't really like to show it. Also it's never easy to hear ourselves with that poor recording and playing quality. But everybody starts somewhere !
"Orogeny", on the other hand, is very representative of the direction we wanted to take and was a turning point in the history of the band.
MD - Manu, Where did you learn your guitar skills and since when did you tend to hone those skills?

After learning the basics in a small local school in Switzerland, I joined various bands where the musicians were at a much higher level than me. Most of them really pulled me up and encouraged me to practice while giving me precious advices which led me to go further and further. Since then, I try to maintain a regular training discipline, even if it's not always easy to stick to it.

MD - Do you have any comment on Lisa's vocals performance as yet?

Lisa's low growls add power and depth to the songs, and create a balance on the most aerials parts. She started the band as a guitarist in 2009 and took the vocals only in 2016 when the last singer left. It was a challenge but she felt in love with « growling ». She hopes that her performance will push women to go on stage too, to show it's possible to make low vocals even if you're not a man, and play the guitar at the same time.

MD - How do you guys begin when compose and writing a song? Does it begin with an acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano or even mobile phone app?

We start composing at the guitar, and then we work with guitar pro to keep our ideas. Afterwards, we discuss possible changes in rehearsal and apply the changes to the song. Florent takes care of the redesign of the whole drum parts, inspired by the structure of the songs and the guitars.
MD - Why wasn't there any tie-up with any label on each of your previous releases?

We wanted to maintain control over distribution at that time, given the small amount of logistics involved. It was more profitable for us that way. We did have a few offers from labels, but nothing that suited us. But after Orogeny, we realized that we sometimes had trouble handling and promoting our music efficiently, especially outside of Europe. After a lot of research, we came across Avantguarde Music who were absolutely on the same wavelength as us. So we signed with them under their death metal division "Unorthodox Emanations" for the next album.

MD - Tell us about your experiences playing big venues, for example in Europe etc...and your idol musicians who you would like to bring with if given the chance and why?

In 2018, we were lucky enough to share the Orogeny tour with Gorgasm (US) and Cenotaph (Turkey). These 2 bands are stalwarts of the brutal death genre and by definition a big influence for some aspects of Anachronism. It was an honor to share the stage with them.

We would also dream to share the stage with bands like Gorguts, Ulcerate, Artificial Brain, Nero di Marte, which are absolutely our main influences here.

MD - Thank you very much for your time. Any final words to convey?

Thanks to write about metal bands, we really appreciate if Malaysian people can read about the band and listen to our music :)
