Interview with DEADLY SPAWN (Japan)

DEADLY SPAWN is an old species that emerges from the land of the rising sun. They move vigorously during this time consisting of ....K.Tsurudome  (Bass/Vocals),  Taiji Tomita  (Drums),  Yuya Takeda  (Guitars),  and  Jiro Ito  (Guitars). They have  been  very active  in Tokyo  since  the  early  90s.  Several  members have previously   served   in   groups   such  as  ADONDETH,  WORMS, INTENSTINE BAALISM, and AZAGTHOTH. This band is excellent at capturing several old school death styles and  merging  them into  something  that  becomes  their  own. Numerous materials were  produced  over  the  past  decade... There’s absolutely no shortage of badass death metal riffage and kickass drumming. They  know  how  to  serve you to the death metal  with a deadly traditional  storm.  Therefore,  a  long  explanation  was given by Taiji (Drummer) about his artistic career and his long journey as a member of DEADLY SPAWN. Let's check it out!

     Tell us about your involvement on DEADLY SPAWN music band's journey and what were valuable things you have done since being with members?

First, Jiro (Guitars) and Tull (Bass, Vocals) founded the band since 1995. After that, Tomita (Drums) and Arakawa joined us in 1997, then we started our performance. We released the 1st tape “DEMO 1998” and 2nd demo tape “Dead Time Stories” in 2001. A few years later, we chose 4 songs from them and released it on CD-R as “DEMO 1998-2001”. 

In 2000,  we  supported  the  Japanese  tour held with MARDUK, DANGERED, and so on. In 2003, Takeda  who  was  belonged to AZAGTHOTH as a guitarist joined our band. So, we continue our music activities with these members. In 2008, we  released  1st album  “From  Beyond  the  Dark”  with  Bloodbath Records and Weird  Truth  Productions.  In  2009,  we  performed  in  GRIND FREAKS  which  was  set  by  UNHOLY GRAVE  in  Nagoya,  V.A. “GRIND BASTARDS # 3”  compilation  released, and we joined it. 2011 - We made a contract with Germany label Metal Inquisition Records  whichb was  well  known about INTENSTINE BAALISM, we released 2nd album “Formed into Atrocities.” with  them.

....2012 - DEADLY SPAWN and AIMING HIGH which is authentic band  in  Japan  released  SPLIT  EP  produced  by  Bloodbath Records  and  Weird  Truth Productions same as 1st album. We sold two types of tape in live venues only in 2013. In September, we joined “Serpent Sermon Tour 2013 in Japan” when MARDUK, TAAKE,  CARACH,  ANGREN,  RUINS  OF  ABANDON,   TEMPEST RISING,  and  ADVENT  SORROW  came to Japan all at once. In   November,  we  performed  in  Japan  with PORTAL. December  VOMITORY,  DEFEATED  SANITY, BEYOND CREATION, ATLANTIS CHRONICLES, FLESHDOLL, and REVENGE came, and we joined Brutal  X ’mas Part 2 In 2014. The year 2016 we did Split sound source until present day.

     Tell us about the response to your discography : demos, splits and two full length albums so far?

Both albums were released several hundreds. Almost Japanese customers who watched our live performance bought them. It was  limited  in  Japanese  labels.  We  were  satisfied  with  the support and all the releases. At that time, it was already past 10 years since we started our activities, so local fans said about us “All the time!!”

You released "Forced into Atrocities" 2012 second album via Metal Inquisition Records. Could you tell us how was the deal?  And  will you continue to work with them again?

Anyway,  we  wanted  to  release  from  European  or American labels, so we check some labels which showed us excitement. Then  we  made a contact with Metal Inquisition Records that had  a  relationship with INTESTINE BAALISM from Japan. At that time,  we  were  satisfied  because  they reached our goal. However, they did not make a positive promotion, It couldn’t be helped. Probably we were lacking in ability. I wanted to give it only customers who always care about us. That’s all.

 You have made a split cd with HUMILIATION in 2016... What is your personal view to the band and Malaysian metal fans?

The label owner who supported us when we released the 1st album recommended it, and we sometimes had a gig, so all members knew them well. We met them for the first time when we  supported  their  1st  Japanese  concert. We support them when  they  held  a  Japan  concert in 2016, too. Last year, we couldn’t play together because of our schedule. However, Tull supported their  tour bas  a driver. We respect each other. The reason why HUMILATION and DEADLY SPAWN released split EP is because members of HUMILATION and the label owner who helped us when we released 1st album suggested us to do that. I’m really sorry, I do not know metal of Malaysia.

      You flow in the MORBID ANGEL pipeline?  maybe you will get out of that funnel for the next material?

All songs of them are very wonderful and cool, and all members like  MORBID  ANGEL  very  much, so we could enjoy play such style  and  audience  would  enjoy  it  too. We, sometimes play some cover songs from their 1st album! First, the sound was bad,  but  we  thought  riff  and energy with first intention were really cool.  It was  characteristic of them. 2nd and 3rd album were  wonderful!!   Off   course!  We  will  stay  with  our  styles. Actually, our music influenced by death metal in early 90s and thrash metal in 80s. We keep listening to SLAYER, PROTECTOR, DESTRUCTION,  SADUS,  PESTILENCE,  DARK ANGEL,  DEATH, SUFFOCATION, AUTOPSY, IMMOLATION,MONTROSITY, GORGUT, MORBID ANGEL,  ENTOMBED, and Japanese death metal, etc…but, we like an orthodox metal with high tone, progressive rock and pop music too.

Tell about your latest inspiration of composing song and lyrics?

Now, we don’t have any plan yet. But, in the past Yuya and Jiro (guitar) make 80 percent of songs part, and Tsulll makes the other part.  They bring  riff  to  the  studio , and we add some arrangement. That’s the  way  of  our  composition. Tsull is in charge of making lyrics. When he does that, he focused on fear of inside heart,  horror  movies,  and  social circumstances in these days. However, only 2nd album, he focused on the World War II.

    Ok tell me about your long awaited new album, How it would be?

After  web released  Split  EP, we play gig only, so our activities stop  at  the  moment.  These  days,  we  don’t  have  any  plan. However, we thought to start making songs for the new album. In the other hand  our style does not change. I don’t know how it would be, technically or speedy songs,but BLOODI NCANTATION is really cool to be influenced.

How many times have you  performed in the local stages and how did your showmanship? 

We usually have live event or tour in suburbs of Tokyo, but we have had tours in Kyushu region and Shikoku region. Sometimes, we go to Tohoku region and Kansai region to play. We play some cover songs sometimes, even you can enjoy our music much wilder when live.

      The Japanese extreme metal scene looks even bigger nowadays. Would you recommend some hyperactive local bands and the biggest metal festival?

We got ANATOMIA, CATAPLEXY, S,O,B, BUTCHER ABC…Limited in  Tokyo,  there  are  dozens  of  bands.  About twice a month, some events was held with death metal bands.  Naru  who  is belonging to BUTCHER ABC sets live events frequently. One of his events ASAKUSA  DEATH FEST  is  held once a year. Many maniacs and big artist in foreign country comes to this event. Last year, PESTILENCE came and performed in this event. It’s really amazing.  But in this day's, under the influence of Covid- 19,  almost all live performances are cancelled.
